BOTOX®

BOTOX® is the number one cosmetic procedure in the country. BOTOX® is a wrinkle reducer for dynamic lines created by muscle movement. Through minimally invasive BOTOX® injections into the facial muscles, the muscle’s action is blocked. By blocking the muscle action, BOTOX® prevents the repetitive actions that cause fine lines and wrinkles. Cosmetic BOTOX® is made from Botulinum toxin, a therapeutic muscle relaxing agent approved by the FDA to reduce frown lines.

Botox can be used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines, and crows feet around the eyes. After treatment, BOTOX® causes little down time. Patients can go back to work. BOTOX® takes up to 10 days to have its desired result. Typically patients need only one treatment of BOTOX®. Sometimes additional areas need to be treated to get optimal effect. BOTOX® lasts from 3-6 months. Most people find that they need BOTOX® treatments every 4 months.

What can I expect from my BOTOX® treatment?

A typical BOTOX® treatment will take 10 minutes. Dr. Hartzell will clean the skin, and then administer several tiny BOTOX® injections in areas desired. There is no downtime; patients can go back to work after BOTOX®.

Are there any side effects of BOTOX®?

BOTOX® can cause an over or under correction. Risks include bruising, swelling, ptosis of the eyelid, and headaches. A full description of side effects can be found at www.botoxcosmetic.com. To minimize bruising from BOTOX® injection, it is recommended that patients avoid aspirin, NSAIDS ( Motrin, Aleve, Advil), fish oil, flax seed oil, and garlic for 10 days prior to treatment.

Juvederm® XC

Juvederm® XC is a cosmetic filler that creates volume in the depression of a fold or wrinkle. Most often it is used in the nasolabial folds. It consists of non-animal based hyaluronic acid which reduces the risk of allergic reaction and eliminates animal-based disease transmission. Unlike with collagen injection, prior allergy testing is not required. Juvederm® is biodegradable and compatible with human hyaluronic acid.

Prior to treatment to avoid increased bruising or bleeding, patients should avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (Advil), St. John’s Wort, or high Vitamin E doses. Patients with prior cold sores may also be at risk for a recurrence.

Juvederm® is injected with a tiny needle right into the depression of the skin fold. The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. Some erythema and swelling may persist for a few days after the procedure. The injection site may be iced after the procedure.

Juvederm® fills the lines that are visible when your face is at rest (static lines). Juvederm® differs from BOTOX® as it relaxes muscles smoothing dynamic lines. Some patients get their desired look by using both products. Juvederm® XC lasts from 9 to 12 months.

Latisse®

Full, natural-looking eyelashes can now be achieved through a prescription treatment called Latisse®. Latisse®, by Allergan, the makers of BOTOX® Cosmetic, is the first and only eyelash treatment approved by the FDA to help grow longer, fuller, and darker eyelashes and treat hypotrichosis, a condition that includes having inadequate or not enough eyelashes.

This prescription medication is applied topically to the base of the eyelashes once a day, after makeup and contact lenses have been removed and any other skincare products have already been applied.

The results of Latisse® are visible after 4 weeks, with full results appearing after 16 weeks. Side effects of Latisse® are rare but may include itching, redness, or dryness in the eye area. You should not use Latisse® if you have an active eye infection or broken skin or irritated skin on the eyelid. Consult with Dr. Hartzell to find out if Latisse® is right for you.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of the skin by treating sun damage, scarring, wrinkles, and other unwanted surface problems. Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates the surface layer of aging or damaged skin, revealing underlying fresh, younger cells and a renewed appearance. Results are comparable to a light chemical peel and should be immediately visible. Multiple treatments are recommended for full effect. Microdermabrasion may be combined with other procedures such as the Obagi® Blue Peel Radiance and Obagi® Skin Care.
